Kinabalu Squirrel Callosciurus baluensis foraging for food near the Timpohon Gate, (1866 m asl) at the start of the Kinabalu Summit Trail.
This squirrel is endemic to the mountains of Borneo where it replaces Prevost’s Squirrel which is the most common forest squirrel of the Borean lowlands. Prevost’s Squirrel and Kinabalu Squirrel often overlap in range between 900-1,200 m at the ecotone where lowland dipterocarp forest is replaced by montane forest rich in oaks and chestnuts.
