These photographs of a Black Treeshrew were uploaded by Rob Hutchison (one of Asia’s top birding guides) to iNaturalist on 8 June 2023 and are here republished under a creative commons license.
These photos are interesting because the animal is obviously a treeshrew but behaving like a squirrel.
Only one of the Bornean treeshrews is highly aboreal (Lesser Treeshrew Tupaia minor) whilst the other treeshrew species forage mainly on the ground and low bushes
Treeshrews have coats that are mainly pale brown, yellowish or greyish never glossy black.
Pending further information the animal in the photos is likely therefore to be a new endemic Bornean mammal.
The photographs were taken on the SE edge of the Meratus mountain range in south Kalimantan already known to be a hotspot of diversity for endemic birds and plants.
